Good in the Hood, our flagship community programme, has been running since 2013. Over the past seven years, you’ve helped us give away $7.19 million to 3,613 community groups and charity organisations in your local area via 213 Z stations across New Zealand.
You know how it works. For one month each year, each of our Z service stations nominate four groups doing great things in their local community to win a share of $5,000. Each time you pop into your local Z to fill up, you’re given an orange token to use to vote for one of the groups they’ve nominated. At the end of the month, the votes are tallied up and each group walks away with funds to help them continue their awesome work.
How does Good in the Hood help community groups and charities?
Raise their profile
“The donation helps us support those with breast cancer. The opportunity to be on the forecourt helps with our visibility in our community and this is very important to us.”
Besides the publicity they receive through our promotional activity, one of the ways groups can raise their profile is by “taking over” a Z forecourt for one day during Good in the Hood month. This gives them the chance to meet their fellow residents to talk about the work they’re doing; it also allows them to connect with people who may benefit from their support.
Keep the lights on (literally)
A lot of the groups tell us the money raised during Good in the Hood goes towards supporting the operational costs of running a charity or community group. The beauty of Good in the Hood is the groups are free to use the money for what matters most to them.
Here’s some of the ways Good in the Hood will be supporting community initiatives in the coming months:
“My charity is now able to have a Christmas party for families with children that have disabilities, illnesses and special needs.”
“We were given enough money to fund 34 people in the community for suicide prevention workshops.”
“We’ll be able to pay our rent for almost a whole year – freeing up money to go towards toys and resources for our Toy Library!"
Keep an eye out for Good in the Hood 2020 for your chance to support groups doing great things in your local community.
