ZWhy The real impact of plastic bags

If you’re like most Kiwis, odds are you have a kitchen drawer stuffed full of plastic bags that you’ve collected in recent months.

But have you ever wondered what happens to those bags when you throw them away?

The majority will end up in landfills, where they can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. The rest end up in our oceans where they endanger birds and marine mammals.

Next time you go shopping, consider bringing re-useable bags. And when it comes time to clean out that plastic bag drawer, think about dropping them off in a soft-plastic waste recycling bin. You might be able to find one at your local supermarket.

Our oceans will thank you for it!
